How Do I Check My Home for Air Leaks
Air leaks are a problem for your home year round. They let heated air escape in the winter and cooled air out in the summer. During wet months, humidity can sneak in through leaks and may lead to mold growth. What’s the solution? Finding and fixing air leaks fast. Here’s what you need to know:
Where are air leaks found?
Air leaks could potentially develop anywhere with an exterior wall, roof, or raised flooring. However, you’re more likely to find one in certain rooms and spaces. Windows and doors are among the most common culprits here. As this age, the seals around them may not stay as tight anymore. Other possibilities include cracks in your foundation if the house has settled or problems with your air duct system.
How do you find them?
Take a few minutes to inspect your house. Can you see any gaps around the weather stripping? Are there cracks or loose screws in your door and window frames? Do you see staining or condensation on the walls? These are all signs that air may be leaking. Another old-fashioned trick is to light a candle or incense. If the flame or smoke blows sharply to the side, that air is coming from somewhere.
How are they fixed?
Minor leaks around ducts can be patched with mastic-type sealant. Loose screws may be tightened or replaced. Old, cracked weatherstripping will likely need to be torn out and replaced as well. Minor issues can be addressed by a home handyman with a screwdriver or a dab of caulk. Bigger problems, or persistent issues where you can’t track down the source, are a job best left to the HVAC professionals.
